Hi Mahadzir,

Those of you who have been following the various AdSense forums -- and that's everyone, right? -- will have noticed that Google has been making a couple of little changes: Four ads are back in the ad units instead of two; and the latest themed ad unit (the one with the cute dogs for the Chinese New Year) didn't override our ad settings and put borders back where there shouldn't be any, like the previous themes did.

That's all good news.

Having four ads in my ad units was driving me crazy. It wasn't that I saw any significant drop in overall revenues but having spent hours optimizing my sites to show four-ad units, to see the layout of my pages changed by Google without a heads-up was pretty frustrating.

I just wish that Google would let us know what they were thinking. Even if we couldn't change their decision, it would certainly help us to prepare so that we can make the most of it.

That's it as far as my complaints go though, because I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the way Google responded to our comments.

A lot of people had been complaining about only receiving two ads instead of the four they'd planned for. And many publishers had pointed out that the borders in their themed ads and the loss of their optimization had hit their CTR. It's good to see that the folks at Google follow what we're saying and act on it.

In fact, I really think that these forums are one of the greatest things about building up AdSense. (Yeah, I know I'm preaching to the choir here but I think it's worth saying.) I talk a lot in my books and presentations about the different ways to optimize a site for AdSense, but these forums are really some of the best resources for new ideas. Everyone who uses AdSense should be reading them on a regular basis, checking out what other people are saying, implementing the recommendations made by people who have been there and done that, and at the very least getting moral support for the times when things don't go quite the way you planned.

These AdSense forums really work... they certainly worked on Google.

AdSense And The Hidden Mysteries Of The Internet

I've been using AdSense for a very long time, and I think I've got it figured out pretty well. I understand how ads need to look to get people to click, I know where to put them and it's pretty rare for my units to show anything other than ads that are highly contextualized. Maybe I could optimize some of the pages a little better (heck, no one's perfect) but on the whole, I think I can say that I know how the system works and I've got it working pretty well for me.

And yet, there are times when I haven't a clue what's going on.

I can look at a week of stats and see my CTR bumping along quite nicely, then all of a sudden there will be a dip one day and a spike the next.

Nothing will have changed. My set up will be exactly the same. The ads will be the same and my traffic sources will have been the same.

So why fewer people will have decided to click one day and more the next is beyond me.

Of course, I don't just see these strange occurrences on my AdSense stats. This pattern can be repeated in my own advertising and in my server logs.

Sometimes, the reason can be fairly clear. I expect traffic levels drop around Christmas and other holidays. Weekend traffic is different to weekday traffic. Even a big news story can drive people away from my site towards other sites... I guess.

But usually, I've got no explanation at all. Of course, as long as drops don't last too long, I don't care -- especially if my overall earnings remain the same. (Although if a drop lasts more than a couple of days then I'm going to start looking very closely at the ads I'm being served, at the page the ads are on and at the source of the traffic I'm getting. If there's no bounce-back by the end of the week, I'm going to be making changes.)

It's pretty rare that my stats go off the rails for more than a day though and I've come to regard these ups and downs as just part of the mysteries of the Internet. It's a constant reminder that there are some things we just can't control.

It's very annoying though.

Ease of Use:
When you first login to the ClickBooth system you are offered with a ton of campaign and search options. ClickBooth does a nice job in making it easy for you to search through their TOP Network offers, which are sorted by Email, OnSite Placement, Search, Path and Networks. Below the “Top” offers section, you can search out all campaigns on their network, and view the most recently added campaigns. Their backend is run off the DirectTrack system, but they have done a great job with customizing it’s look, so it has a much better look and feel than many other networks.

On the main login page, you will also find your full contact information for your affiliate manager, along with all the basic tools needed to manage your account, such as “program links”, “tools” and “running reports”. A “Quick Links” menu on the left side gives you easy access to new campaigns, deactivations and other updates made to campaigns.

If you run a web site and are looking to fill some banner advertising in, I highly recommend Casale Media. Instead of advertising on a CPA basis, Casale Media will buy your inventory on a CPM basis. I’ve been running Casale Media for years and they have always supplied quality advertisements and payments always sent on time. Publishers are paid 70% of the revenue received from all advertising campaigns served on their websites through the network, which is an industry high! Lastly, Casale Media is a bit tough on who they accept into the network. If they don’t accept you the first time, ask what you can do to meet their requirements and/or apply again in a couple months.

Payments are always sent on time and ValueClick is one of the largest marketing companies online, so you shouldn’t have to ever worry about their future. I’ve been with FastClick/ValueClick Media even longer than Casale Media, so I highly recommend ValueClick Media as well. If you are not accepted into Casale Media, you will have a much better chance with ValueClick Media as they seem to be more accepting of sites as of lately.

AdBrite is like a combination of Google Adsense and Casale Media/ValueClick Media. Through AdBrite you can run contextual advertising, banner advertising and interstitial advertising. I have been using AdBrite for quite some time across my network of sites. They have a nice setup for stats tracking and payment is always sent on time. AdBrite’s latest additions were video and picture advertising. You can now have your own video player (embedded with your own logo), which will show an advertisement at the end of the video. You can also use their BritePic service to display image advertising on your site!

Almost everyone making money online with a blog or text listing is already running Google Adsense. This program is great because it will sync right up with the content on your site and deliver related advertisements that your site visitors might actually want to see. Another reason why Adsense is so great is because you can play with the ad specs and make it blend in with your site and content. Many different sizes/formats are available and the color schemes are endless. Google does not disclose the revenue split between itself and publishers, but plenty of us still main nice coin! YPN is much like Google Adsense… only much harder to get into! In addition to being in beta and not accepting most applications, most have found that YPN displays much higher paying advertisements than Google Adsense, yet not as targeted. A company with the size and reputation of Yahoo should have no problems with payments, and they haven’t… payment has always been on time. You can also request payment by check or direct deposit. They even send out some nice holiday gifts sometimes too!

I haven’t been using AzoogleAds as much lately, but I sure have used them a lot over the past couple of years. AzoogleAds has a massive selection of CPA type offers and are one of the leaders in the cpa marketplace. Something else that is really cool about AzoogleAds is that they reward their affiliates each month! Depending on how much you earn during a month, you will receive a certain amount of points. If you meet their minimums you can get free gift cards each month. Incentives rock, and so has my experience with AzoogleAds.

TafMaster is a great web site I used to run all the time! Due to a change in marketing and different web site focuses I don’t use them as much anymore, but I still get a check from them every month. TafMaster is run by Focalex,. In short, TafMaster is a super easy way for you to add Tell-A-Friend forms to your web site or blog, while getting paid for it. You simply copy and paste a code to your site and the form is built in and all emails are sent through the system. You then earn commissions on cpa listings in the notification emails and coregistration fields on the tell-a-friend form. This type of offer is great for greeting card sites and humor/picture sites. TafMaster also runs a nice rewards program where you earn points for each $1 earned. Save up your points and you could get a free huge screen tv or new desktop! (I got an ipod!)

Recently, I pointed out that blogging can be an excellent way for people to start earning with AdSense. It takes no effort at all to get a blog up and running on Blogger and you pretty much start with one ad well blended at the top of the page.

But there's a difference between starting with AdSense and making a good income from it, and that's really the goal, right? I'm sure that most bloggers who put ads on their sites would really like to see their entries making so much money that they can kick the day job and make their living as a professional blogger. They'd be getting paid to talk about their favorite topics, and what could be better than that?

There are some people online who do exactly that. But you've got to do a lot more than put one ad at the top of your Blogger site -- however well-blended it might be -- to become a professional blogger.

First, most professional bloggers run more than one blog. They often run several. They also talk about a lot more than their families and their points of view. They give valuable information that people can use in their own lives or their businesses, and best of all, they become the center of a community in which other people swap tips and ideas. So if they're travel agents, they can write blogs that reveal how to find bargains. If they're accountants, they can warn about hidden tax liabilities.

That's valuable content aimed at a market that wants it.

And then there are the ads.

You could tell readers how to choose next week's winning lottery numbers but if you don't have ad units in the best places on the page and showing the sorts of ads your users will want to click, you won't get a penny from the winnings. You'll have to know how to make sure AdSense is serving the ads you want to receive. You'll have to know how to make those ads stand out while still blending in. And you'll have to know how to follow your stats so that you can leap on a drop in earnings as soon as it happens.

It's a combination of creating valuable content, smart AdSense strategy and a good knowledge of Internet marketing too. Just get that -- and it's really not too hard -- and you can be a professional blogger too.
